17 March 2019: Sheep and goats
Today’s reading was the parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46) and the theme for today, based on the Five Marks of Mission, was “Tend” (respond to human need).
At Sunday Special the Rector got the children to act out the parable of the sheep and the goats by separating them to stand on different sides of her - and then realised a bit late that most of the girls were on her right and most of the boys were on her left. Make of that what you will!
She emphasised the need to look after others. The hymns included “When I needed a neighbour” and one that I hadn’t heard before which had the chorus “I want to be a sheep - baa, baa, baa, baa”.
The lay minister who preached at Evening Prayer emphasised that it is not sufficient for us to salve our consciences by giving money to good causes; we need to take positive action ourselves to help others, eg by volunteering for local charities or doing a housebound neighbour’s shopping.
